In a commanding performance, the No. 8-ranked TCU women’s basketball team secured its second consecutive Big 12 victory, defeating BYU 72-48 on New Year’s Eve in Provo, Utah. This marked TCU’s first true road game since facing N.C. State earlier in the season, and the Horned Frogs (14-0, 2-0) demonstrated resilience against the Cougars (12-2, 1-1), who provided a tough challenge.

The game showcased TCU’s balanced scoring approach, bolstered by senior guard Veronica Sheffey, who made a significant impact off the bench. After a tightly contested first half, where BYU trailed by a slim margin late in the second quarter, Sheffey spurred TCU to a 33-25 halftime lead with a personal 6-0 run, including a crucial three-pointer and three free throws.

While BYU kept the game close through the third quarter, trailing by just two points at one point, TCU shifted gears after a pivotal 3-pointer from graduate transfer guard Olivia Miles. This sparked a decisive 12-2 run that extended TCU’s lead, ultimately finishing the third quarter at 50-38.

The fourth quarter saw the Horned Frogs dominate, outscoring BYU 22-8 as junior guard Donovyn Hunter and sophomore center Clara Silva contributed key baskets to solidify the victory. Miles, who achieved her fourth triple-double in five games with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists, led the charge. Silva topped the scoring for TCU with 15 points, while Sheffey achieved a season-high with 10 points. Additionally, both Taylor Bigby and Marta Suarez added 12 points apiece.

Defensively, TCU was impressive, limiting BYU to a mere 30% shooting from the field. The Horned Frogs will remain in Utah as they prepare to face the Utes on Saturday at 8 p.m. in Salt Lake City, with hopes of continuing their unbeaten streak.

This game not only highlights TCU’s growing prowess on the court but also sets a hopeful tone for the remainder of the season as they navigate tougher competition in the coming weeks.
