Texas Christian University (TCU) will honor acclaimed filmmaker Taylor Sheridan with an honorary Doctor of Letters degree during its spring commencement on May 9, 2025. This ceremony will mark a significant occasion, as it will be TCU’s first commencement specifically for graduate-level candidates, showcasing students from eight different colleges and schools, including the Burnett School of Medicine and Brite Divinity School. The university is set to celebrate its largest graduating class yet, with over 2,900 candidates expected to receive their degrees.
Sheridan, a Fort Worth native known for his work on acclaimed productions such as Yellowstone, 1883, and Hell or High Water, will be recognized for his contributions to the arts and the Texas film industry. His collaboration with TCU has provided invaluable opportunities for students in the Film, Television and Digital Media program, allowing them to gain hands-on experience in various production roles during the filming of his series, Landman, on campus. This initiative engaged numerous students and has facilitated a rich professional networking environment.
Brad Thompson, TCU’s executive director of university events, highlighted the importance of tradition in TCU’s evolving commencement ceremonies, reflecting the university’s commitment to preparing students for future success. President Daniel W. Pullin emphasized Sheridan’s impact on students, stating that his involvement has opened doors for young creatives and positioned them to thrive in the competitive entertainment industry.
As TCU gears up for this momentous event, it underscores the importance of storytelling and the opportunities that arise when students are empowered to embrace their narratives. The upcoming graduation is expected to include a diverse group of graduates from 46 countries and all 50 states, with many achieving academic excellence.
This recognition and the engagement of creative initiatives like those led by Taylor Sheridan signify a hopeful future for TCU graduates, fostering both personal growth and professional development.
