Tonya and Tyler Raaf from Holton faced a harrowing ordeal when they rushed their 13-year-old daughter, Tinley, to Holton Community Hospital on November 29. Tinley displayed concerning symptoms including extreme lethargy, difficulty speaking, and an inability to stay awake. Her mother, Tonya, described the unsettling moment, saying, “When she looked at you, it was like she was looking through you.”
Tragically, shortly after arriving at the hospital, Tinley slipped into a coma. She was quickly transferred to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Overland Park, where she remained for five days before miraculously waking up. Upon regaining consciousness, Tinley began her journey of recovery, speaking the following day and starting to eat the day after that.
The eighth-grader, who is an avid fan of Taylor Swift, was recently granted the extraordinary opportunity to meet her idol during a hospital visit. “I felt good to be able to talk to her and see her,” Tinley expressed happily. This meeting was especially significant for the Raaf family, who have been through a tumultuous few weeks, with Tonya staying at the hospital while Tyler commuted daily from home to care for their 11-year-old son, Tye. “It’s been a scary roller coaster ride,” Tyler shared, expressing his gratitude for the support they have received.
Taylor Swift, who has been in the spotlight due to her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, took time to visit several children in the hospital. During her interaction with Tinley, the two talked about Tinley’s favorite Chiefs players, including Kelce and Patrick Mahomes. The visit brought joy to Tinley, and Swift surprised her with a signed copy of her new “Eras Tour” book.
In a heartfelt gesture, the next day, Tinley received a beautifully wrapped Dyson airwrap blow dryer along with a note from Swift that read, “T, in case Santa doesn’t come through … love, Taylor.” This thoughtful gift deeply moved Tonya, who expressed her appreciation for Swift’s kindness, emphasizing that such an extraordinary gift was beyond what they could have imagined.
The Raaf family, filled with hope, is looking forward to returning home before the holiday season, further uplifted by the support and compassion they’ve experienced during this challenging time.
This heartwarming story not only highlights Tinley’s inspiring recovery but also illustrates the positive impact acts of kindness can have on individuals during their darkest moments. As they navigate this journey, the Raaf family remains optimistic about the future ahead.
