Tavua has marked a remarkable achievement this year by recording the lowest crime rate in Fiji, with only 71 reported incidents, as announced by Acting Commissioner of Police Aporosa Lutunauga. This accomplishment underscores the strong collaboration between the community and law enforcement, showcasing a unified commitment to public safety through various local initiatives.
During a recent Town Hall session held by the Fijian Media Association in Tavua, Mr. Lutunauga expressed appreciation for the residents’ proactive involvement in crime prevention efforts. He highlighted the critical role of 64 local crime prevention committees in fostering trust between the police and the community, which has been essential in driving down crime rates.
The Tavua policing district, covering 298 square kilometers, includes six villages, 12 schools, and 438 cane farms, serving approximately 45,000 residents. Within the district, there are two police stations located in Tavua and Vatukoula, complemented by community posts in Nadarivatu and Lausa, staffed by a dedicated team of 83 police officers.
While there have been occasional minor drug-related incidents, Mr. Lutunauga emphasized that serious drug activity remains rare. He acknowledged the presence of drugs in the area but noted that the quantities involved are not significant. The last major drug seizure took place two years ago when police confiscated four kilograms of methamphetamine valued at $1.3 million. More recently, officers uprooted 1,000 marijuana plants worth $3.2 million before they reached the market, demonstrating ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address drug-related challenges effectively.
