Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum, who had a limited role during Team USA’s gold medal journey at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is not allowing this experience to influence his decision regarding the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Tatum acknowledged that it was challenging to not have a significant impact on the court, as he played only 11 minutes during the United States’ 98-87 victory over France, contributing just two points and three rebounds. He did not participate in the games against Serbia, which included a dramatic comeback semifinal win, with coach Steve Kerr citing matchup considerations as the reason for his limited playing time.
Others in the team also faced similar situations; for example, Joel Embiid did not play against South Sudan, and Derrick White was absent during the match against France. Tyrese Haliburton, despite sitting out three of the six Olympic games, expressed his joy over winning a gold medal.
Tatum, who had an impressive NBA season averaging 26.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.9 assists while leading the Celtics to their first championship since 2008, recently signed a five-year, $315 million extension with the team. Centered in Boston, he recognized that he often took a back seat during the Olympic campaign.
Reflecting on advice from others to use this experience as motivation, Tatum remarked, “There’s a lot of people that care about me,” but he emphasized the human aspect of competing and the sacrifices he has made for his career. He plans to learn from this Olympic experience, recognizing its challenges and humbling nature.
Looking ahead to the 2028 Olympics, Tatum understands Team USA will likely have a new look, as key players like LeBron James and Stephen Curry will be in their 40s, while Kevin Durant will be 39. Despite his frustrations with the recent Olympic experience, Tatum is focused on maintaining perspective and avoiding hasty decisions about his future with Team USA.
