Fernando Tatis Jr. is currently pursuing legal action aimed at nullifying a future earnings contract he entered into as a minor leaguer in the Dominican Republic in 2017. The lawsuit, filed on Monday against investment firm Big League Advance (BLA), could free Tatis from potentially owing approximately $34 million from his 14-year, $340 million deal signed with the San Diego Padres in February 2021.
BLA specializes in funding young players by providing them with upfront payments in exchange for a percentage of their future Major League Baseball (MLB) earnings. Tatis reportedly received $2 million from BLA, which requires him to pay 10% of his MLB income, extending to any future contracts he may sign.
Tatis’ lawsuit alleges that BLA employed aggressive and deceptive strategies to incentivize him to sign a deal that functioned like an illegal loan, and that they misrepresented their business status and practices, violating California consumer protection laws. The complaint, filed in the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego, not only seeks to void the contract but also aims to safeguard other young athletes from similar predatory practices.
In a statement, Tatis emphasized that he is fighting for all aspiring players looking to better their lives through sports. “Kids’ focus should be on their passion for baseball, not dodging shady business deals,” he stated.
Initially, Tatis viewed his agreement with BLA positively, believing the funds would enhance his training and living standards to prepare for a successful MLB career. However, the drastic pay scale for minor leaguers back in 2017, with Class A players earning around $1,300 per month in-season, added pressure on players like Tatis to seek external funding.
While injuries and an 80-game PED suspension have impacted Tatis’ career trajectory, he remains a prominent figure in the sport, with two All-Star appearances and a Gold Glove after transitioning to right field. His legal challenge is notable as it underscores the ongoing conversation about the financial treatment of young athletes and the importance of legislation to protect them.
