A man, aged 30, is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries following a shooting that occurred early Tuesday morning on Madison’s north side. The Madison Police Department received multiple reports of gunfire shortly after 4 a.m. in the 2100 block of Schlimgen Avenue and responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, officers found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds and promptly transported him to a local hospital for urgent care. According to the Madison Police, the incident appears to have been targeted. MPD Public Information Officer, Stephanie Fryer, indicated the serious implications of firearm use in public spaces, noting that preliminary evidence suggests the shooter was specifically waiting for the victim.

Later in the day, authorities deployed MPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team to conduct a search warrant at an apartment in the 700 block of W. Washington Avenue. Several individuals were detained during this operation, including a person of interest. While there are currently no formal charges, a gun was confiscated from the location, and detectives are investigating whether it was involved in the shooting. The victim remains in critical condition as the inquiry continues.

Despite the alarming nature of this event, it is noteworthy that the Madison Police Department reported a 7.8% decrease in shots fired incidents from the previous year, with 59 incidents recorded since January 1, 2025. This suggests that ongoing efforts for community safety and crime reduction may be yielding some progress.
