CHAPEL HILL — During the 2025-26 season, the theme of resiliency has emerged as a defining characteristic for the 17th-ranked Tar Heels (24-6, 12-5 ACC), as they prepare to face No. 1 Duke (28-2, 16-1) at Cameron Indoor Stadium on March 7 at 6:30 p.m. ET. Despite the challenges posed by injuries to key players, the team’s ability to overcome setbacks has been a focal point for their success this season.

Senior guard Seth Trimble, who missed nine games due to a broken forearm, emphasized that the team’s strength lies in their unity and mental fortitude. “It’d be our No. 1 stat. That’s the most important thing on this team: keeping our circle just us, hearing only just us and relying on just us takes us such a long way,” Trimble remarked. This mindset has been crucial in maintaining focus and dampening external pressures that come with competitive play.

Fifth-year head coach Hubert Davis has fostered this sense of connection among his players, providing them with a handbook early in the season that underscored the importance of teamwork—illustrating a circle of player names as a constant reminder of their collective goal. “This is a tight group and we have to stay together,” Davis noted, reflecting on the resilience showcased by the team amid adjustments throughout the season.

The Tar Heels’ path has not been easy. When Trimble was sidelined, the team achieved an impressive 8-1 record over nine games without him. However, they faced challenges with a tough January stretch, allowing an average of 92 points in games against SMU, Stanford, and Cal. In response, Davis has skillfully adapted strategies, leading to a five-game winning streak where the team found renewed defensive strength.

Recent challenges included a tough loss to Miami, further complicated by the absence of standout freshman forward Caleb Wilson due to a fractured left hand. Yet, in Wilson’s absence, UNC has continued to find success, boasting a 5-1 record, including a four-game winning streak. Wilson’s potential return against Duke adds a layer of anticipation as the Tar Heels remain committed to their “just us” mentality and tightly-knit team culture.

As they prepare for one of their most significant matchups this season, the Tar Heels embody the power of resilience and teamwork. Coach Davis has expressed pride in how his players have adapted and responded to adversity, underscoring that their journey, marked by challenges, reflects remarkable growth and determination.

The upcoming game against Duke promises to be a critical test of not only their skills but also of their collective spirit and unity, as UNC continues to focus on their core values amidst the pressures of the season.
