Jeff Knight, a businessman from the Tampa Bay area, has been arrested in connection with a tragic boating accident that occurred in April, resulting in one death and multiple injuries. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) charged Knight with eight felony counts for leaving the scene of the incident, including charges related to death or serious bodily injury.

The incident took place around 8:40 p.m. on April 27, when Knight, 62, collided with the Clearwater ferry, which was carrying 45 passengers near the Memorial Causeway bridge. José Castro, a 41-year-old man, was tragically killed, and ten others sustained injuries as a result of the crash. Following the collision, Knight fled the scene but was apprehended by deputies about 3.5 miles away, where a breathalyzer test indicated he had no alcohol in his system.

FWC officials stated that additional misdemeanor charges regarding failure to maintain a safe speed and proper lookout will be filed with the State Attorney’s Office. Maj. Evan Laskowski of the FWC highlighted the collaborative effort in pursuing justice for those affected by this unfortunate event.

Knight, who owns several businesses in St. Petersburg, including Jannus Live and Pelican Pub, stepped down from his role at Jannus Live shortly after the accident. His attorney claims that Knight initially stayed at the scene, assisting those on board, but panicked when he realized his boat was taking on water, prompting him to leave.

The FWC conducted a thorough investigation, analyzing surveillance footage and witness statements, which led to the charges against Knight. The investigation update will be provided by FWC at Clearwater Police Department on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Knight has a prior history of boating-related charges, including citations for careless vessel operation and incidents dating back to 2012. Notably, previous charges he faced were either dismissed or not sentenced, highlighting a pattern that has raised concerns about his boating conduct.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible boating practices and the potential consequences of negligence on the water. Community members are hopeful that the ongoing investigation will bring clarity and justice to those impacted by this tragedy.
