The Knight Creative Communities Institute (KCCI) has received preliminary approval for a $30,000 grant intended for a large-scale mural project at SOMO Walls in Tallahassee, bringing it one step closer to realization. However, final approval is still pending from the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Board, which has rescheduled its meeting to January 28 at 9 a.m. The inclusion of the grant on the agenda for that meeting remains uncertain.

This proposed project aims to transform eight shipping containers into a vibrant 2,700 square-foot public art space, engaging local artists to create the murals. KCCI’s request was given initial backing by the Greater Frenchtown-Southside Citizen’s Advisory Committee earlier this week.

While excitement surrounds the project, it has faced scrutiny. Some community members raised concerns regarding the allocation of public funds, pointing out that the CRA had already provided KCCI with $1.5 million in support. Additionally, there were calls for increased community input regarding the project’s design and planning.

KCCI Executive Director Betsy Couch highlighted the positive impact the mural installation could have on the local economy and its potential to enhance community visibility. The landowner of SOMO Walls is also prepared to match the $30,000 grant, amplifying the project’s potential benefits. Should the CRA board approve the grant in February, KCCI plans to engage the community, issue a call for artists, and establish a timeline for the project’s completion, which could take six to eight months.

This mural initiative aims not only to beautify the area but also to foster community involvement and showcase local talent, enhancing the cultural landscape of Downtown Tallahassee.
