In Northeast Tallahassee, as temperatures dip, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office is ramping up its efforts to support the homeless community through its Homeless Outreach Street Team (HOST). This initiative aims to connect individuals experiencing homelessness with available shelters and provide essential supplies to those who may choose not to utilize the shelter services.
Deputy Paul Pacchioli, a member of the HOST team, emphasized the team’s commitment to finding and assisting those in need. “That’s all we do every day,” he stated, highlighting their focus on connecting individuals with necessary services and resources. The team is actively on the streets, offering items such as blankets and beanies to ensure that those who prefer to stay outdoors are at least kept warm.
With a protocol that kicks in when temperatures drop below 35°F for three consecutive hours before sunrise, the Sheriff’s Office is proactive in informing the community about shelter availability. “Hey, it’s going to be cold. Emergency shelters are open. Please go take them,” Deputy Pacchioli urged, as the HOST team continues its nightly outreach throughout the week.
The team’s efforts have made a tangible difference, as evidenced by interactions with individuals like James, who expressed gratitude for the additional blanket provided for his companion, Meatball. “For Meatball? Absolutely,” he replied enthusiastically, showcasing the human connections fostered through this outreach.
As cold weather persists, the HOST team remains dedicated to keeping homeless residents warm and safe, encouraging them to transition from the streets to the warmth of shelters. This outreach reflects a compassionate and proactive response to a critical issue, ensuring that no one is left to brave the harsh conditions alone.
