The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has issued a warning regarding potential aftershocks following a significant earthquake that struck Taitung County. The magnitude 6.1 quake occurred at 5:47 PM, approximately 10.1 kilometers north of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 11.9 kilometers.
According to CWA data, the earthquake’s effects were most intense in Beinan Township with an intensity rating of 5, while parts of Taitung, Hualien, and Pingtung counties experienced lesser tremors rated at 4. In the aftermath, the region felt several aftershocks, with three quakes recorded early today ranging from magnitude 4.0 to 4.6, occurring between 3:41 AM and 10:44 AM.
Wu Chien-fu, the director of the CWA’s Seismological Center, explained that the earthquake was a shallow event resulting from the ongoing collision of the Philippine Sea Plate and the Eurasian Plate. He cautioned residents that aftershocks of magnitude 5.5 to 6 may occur within the week and urged the public to remain vigilant.
During the earthquake, many residents rushed out into the streets, leading to overturned merchandise in supermarkets and structural damage, including the collapse of parts of the ceiling at National Taitung University Affiliated Physical Education Senior High School. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
In response to the quake, train services along the Taitung line were temporarily halted due to electrical disruptions, but inspections confirmed safety, and services between Guanshan and Taitung resumed by 7:30 PM. Meanwhile, bus services were organized to transport passengers affected by the disruptions.
This event underscores the need for preparedness in earthquake-prone areas, and the CWA’s proactive communication is vital for ensuring public safety. Residents are reminded to stay alert and ready for any aftershocks in the days to come.
