Tailevu Provincial Council Chair Semi Matalau has expressed strong support for the traditional practice of soli, or fundraising, within the province, affirming its potential to deliver significant benefits not only to current residents but also to future generations. As part of this initiative, Matalau announced plans for the upcoming “Adi Tailevu” fundraising event, which was previously an annual fixture, scheduled to coincide with the Provincial Council meeting next year.
Matalau highlighted that the funds raised through this event would play a crucial role in supplementing government support for the Tailevu Provincial Office, aimed at advancing various development plans. He emphasized, “This will benefit the people of Tailevu, not anyone outside the province,” reflecting a commitment to local development.
In a broader context, this initiative aligns with the province’s emphasis on harnessing local resources and empowering the community, reminiscent of recent successful fundraising events such as Tailevu Youth Day, which raised over $32,000. This event aimed to revitalize youth engagement and address pressing social issues, showcasing the positive momentum for youth-driven community projects. Senior figures from the council, including Jeremaia Merekula, noted that such initiatives are indicative of the community’s ability to support projects that empower young people and promote their active participation in provincial development.
Furthermore, Matalau’s focus on utilizing local resources speaks to a sustainable approach that encourages self-reliance within the community, reinforcing the significance of council-led initiatives aimed at developing leadership among youth and addressing local needs. The council’s ongoing commitment to youth empowerment through workshops and community projects further exemplifies its strategic direction toward improved social cohesion, cultural preservation, and better health and education outcomes.
The positives stemming from these collective efforts suggest a hopeful future for Tailevu’s communities as they come together to support their development. By engaging in fundraising and harnessing local talent and resources, Tailevu Province is positioning itself to foster resilience and long-term growth for its residents.
