The Tailevu Rugby Football Union has taken decisive action against Korocawiri (Ovea) Rugby Club and Natakali Rugby Club following a troubling incident during their Semi-Final match at the 2026 Tailevu Rugby 10s tournament on February 28, held at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.

In a formal announcement, Tailevu Rugby Union President Joseph Rodan Snr acknowledged the integral role of positive behavior from clubs and supporters in sports. After consultations with various committees and representatives, it was concluded to award the match to Natakali Rugby Club after Korocawiri Rugby Club abandoned the game just one minute before the conclusion while trailing.

Both clubs will face financial penalties and receive a written warning, with Rodan highlighting that future breaches may result in termination or expulsion from competitions managed by the Tailevu Rugby Football Union. He emphasized the importance of these clubs in youth development and community engagement through rugby, asserting that sports can foster discipline, unity, and constructive social opportunities.

To ensure compliance with rugby principles, the Union will assist these clubs in adhering to the World Rugby Values and Code of Conduct, with official communications dispatched on March 2, 2026.

Additionally, the Tailevu Rugby Union expressed gratitude to the Fiji Police Force and Forces Training Group Rugby Team for their crucial role in maintaining order during the incident.

Fiji Rugby Union Board Chairman John Sanday responded firmly, reiterating that rugby in Fiji goes beyond mere competition; it is a fundamental part of discipline and an avenue for positive societal transformation. He denounced any behavior undermining these values and affirmed his support for the Tailevu Rugby Union’s disciplinary actions, encouraging all provincial unions to reinforce that such conduct has no place in the sport. Sanday called for collaborative efforts to ensure rugby venues remain safe environments that truly reflect the spirit of Fijian rugby.

The Tailevu Rugby Union remains committed to fostering discipline and respect while continuing to support the growth of rugby in the region, reflecting its dedication to creating a positive sporting environment.
