Tagovailoa Under Fire as Critics Speak Out

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa recently found himself in the midst of media scrutiny after commenting on criticism of his performance at a press conference. Tagovailoa remarked, “anybody can criticize, but I don’t think anyone can play quarterback,” which drew responses from former NFL player Cam Newton and sports commentator Stephen A. Smith.

Newton, responding on ESPN’s “First Take,” reiterated his previous stance, asserting, “Do I feel a certain type of way? Absolutely not. I said what I said and I’ll stand on what I said.” Newton suggested that the situation with Tagovailoa in Miami was more akin to “Love Island drama” than football, although he acknowledged Tagovailoa’s talent and capability. Newton made it clear he bore no personal grudge, attributing Tagovailoa’s comments as likely meant for the broader critical audience.

Stephen A. Smith, known for his outspoken opinions, took exception to Tagovailoa’s remark, describing it as “one of the most ignorant comments” he’s heard from a quarterback. Smith highlighted that Newton, unlike journalists, had an extensive career in the NFL, emphasizing the expertise behind Newton’s critiques.

Despite the criticisms, Newton later expressed doubt that Tagovailoa’s comments were directly aimed at him, opting to give the quarterback the benefit of the doubt. He continued to express belief in Tagovailoa’s ability while acknowledging the challenges ahead.

In the early stages of the 2025 NFL season, statistics show Jake Browning of the Cincinnati Bengals as the only quarterback with more interceptions than Tagovailoa. Additionally, Tagovailoa’s Total QBR ranks among the worst alongside Russell Wilson, J.J. McCarthy, and Cam Ward.

This public exchange highlights the intense scrutiny NFL quarterbacks face and how their words can reverberate both on and off the field. Despite mixed performance reviews, Tagovailoa’s journey through the season remains a closely watched narrative.
