Syracuse’s Showdown: Can the Orange Upset No. 23 Georgia Tech?

Syracuse Football is set to compete against No. 23 Georgia Tech in the Dome for their second game of the 2024 season.

Syracuse enters the matchup with a 1-0 record after securing a victory over the Ohio Bobcats in their opening game. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech boasts a 2-0 record, having stunned Florida State in their first game and comfortably defeating Georgia State in Week 2.

This game marks a pivotal opportunity for Fran Brown to earn a signature win with the Orange.

In the first quarter, at 12:21, Syracuse scored the first touchdown as quarterback Kyle McCord connected with Trebor Pena, capping a seven-play, 75-yard drive. The score was Syracuse 7, Georgia Tech 0.

However, at 7:52, Georgia Tech responded with their own touchdown. After evading a tackle, Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King reached the end zone, tying the game upon review which confirmed his knee was not down. The score was now Syracuse 7, Georgia Tech 7.

Syracuse had a missed field goal attempt at 1:58, resulting in a turnover on downs, keeping the game tied at 7.

In the second quarter, at 12:27, Trebor Pena scored again, marking his fourth touchdown of the season, after another pass from Kyle McCord, which put Syracuse ahead 14-7.

At 6:19, McCord showcased his throwing abilities again, finding Oronde Gadsden II for another touchdown, extending the lead to 14 points. Syracuse had accumulated 35 plays for 293 yards at this point.

The momentum shifted back to Georgia Tech at 4:39, when King rushed for his second touchdown, narrowing the gap to 21-14 in favor of Syracuse.

Syracuse struggled on a subsequent possession, resulting in a blocked punt by Jack Stonehouse at 1:29, giving Georgia Tech a chance to drive before halftime. They missed a 45-yard field goal attempt as time expired, leaving the score at Syracuse 21, Georgia Tech 14 at halftime.

In the third quarter, at 6:51, Brady Denaburg kicked a 33-yard field goal, increasing Syracuse’s lead to 24-14.

In the fourth quarter, at 8:39, Syracuse extended their advantage further with another touchdown as McCord completed a 17-yard pass to Gadsden II, bringing the score to 31-14.

Georgia Tech struck back at 5:08 with a touchdown pass from King to Chase Lane, making it 31-21. Just moments later, at 5:06, Georgia Tech recovered an onside kick.
