Sydney Sweeney has revealed the first images of her portrayal of boxer Christy Martin in the upcoming biopic directed by David Michôd. Sweeney took to Instagram to share behind-the-scenes photos, acknowledging that the news was out, thanks to paparazzi.
In the images, Sweeney showcases a mullet hairstyle while flexing her biceps. She expressed her dedication to the role, stating, “For the past few months, I’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman—a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring. Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all. More to come soon.”
The film will chronicle Christy Martin’s rise to fame as America’s most successful female boxer during the 1990s. She made history as the first woman to sign with promoter Don King and was the only female boxer featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Sweeney’s co-stars include Tony Cavalero, Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, Katy O’Brian, and Chad L. Colman.
Earlier this year, Sweeney had hinted at her role, telling Deadline, “Christy Martin not only legitimized female boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes and fought through emotional, physical, and financial abuse. I’m passionate about the fighting world, Christy’s story shines a light on her incredible rise to the top while showing the struggles of fame behind the curtains. I feel compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced so much adversity and didn’t allow it to defeat her. It’s powerful, and emotional.”
