Sydney Sweeney has unveiled new images of her transformation into boxer Christy Martin for an upcoming biopic, showcasing a ’90s mullet and a newly toned physique to portray the former athlete accurately.
“Thanks to some photographers in the bushes, I can finally share a sneak peek from the film I’m working on,” Sweeney mentioned in an Instagram post.
In this untitled sports biopic, directed by David Michod, Sweeney plays Martin, a former professional boxer active from 1989 to 2012, who became the world champion in the super welterweight category in 2009. Martin’s life also took a dark turn when, in 2010, she survived a murder attempt by her husband, James Martin, who stabbed her multiple times and shot her at their home in Florida. He was later convicted of attempted second-degree murder in 2012 and received a 25-year prison sentence.
“Over the past few months, I’ve dedicated myself to training to portray the story of an incredible woman — a true champion who faced challenges both inside and outside the ring,” Sweeney expressed. “Her journey exemplifies resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honored to share her powerful story with all of you. Stay tuned for more updates 🙂 CHRISTY MARTIN.”
Christy Martin was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020, becoming part of the first ballot that included women.
The film’s cast features Ben Foster as James Martin, along with Merritt Weaver, Katy O’Brien, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, Chad L. Coleman, and Tony Cavalero. Production is being handled by Anonymous Content, Black Bear, Fifty-Fifty Films, Votiv, and Yoki Inc.
