Sydney Sweeney Transforms into Boxing Legend Christy Martin

Sydney Sweeney has unveiled the first images of herself in the role of boxer Christy Martin for an upcoming biopic directed by David Michôd.

“The cat’s out of the bag thanks to some photographers hiding in the bushes, so here’s a little behind-the-scenes look at the film I’m currently working on,” Sweeney posted on Instagram.

In the pictures, Sweeney showcases a mullet hairstyle while displaying her biceps.

“Over the past few months, I’ve been deeply engaged in training to portray the story of an incredible woman—a true champion who faced challenges both in and out of the ring,” she added. “Her journey exemplifies resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story. More to come soon.”

The film, which Michôd directed from a screenplay co-written with Mirrah Foulkes, narrates the true story of Christy Martin, who became America’s most successful female boxer during the 1990s. She was the first woman to sign with promoter Don King and the only female boxer to feature on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Sweeney will be joined by co-stars Tony Cavalero, Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, Katy O’Brian, and Chad L. Coleman.

Earlier this year, Sweeney expressed her excitement about the role, telling Deadline, “Christy Martin not only legitimized female boxing, she overcame gender stereotypes and fought through emotional, physical, and financial abuse. I’m passionate about the fighting world; Christy’s story highlights her incredible rise to the top while revealing the struggles of fame behind the scenes. I feel compelled to tell a story about a woman who faced immense adversity and did not let it defeat her. It’s powerful and emotional.”
