Sydney police custody death prompts renewed focus on domestic violence

A tragic incident unfolded in Australia where a former Fiji resident, Simon Chand, has died in police custody following an alleged violent assault on his wife, Renuka Chand, who is also originally from Fiji. The couple, who had migrated to Australia several years ago, were involved in a domestic dispute at their home in Lurnea, southwest Sydney. The police allege that Simon, aged 60, attacked his 58-year-old wife with a weapon before fleeing the scene. Renuka, injured and distressed, sought help from neighbors and was subsequently transported to Liverpool Hospital, where she is reportedly recovering from serious injuries.

The situation escalated when Simon was later located at a relative’s home in Sadleir, after his brother-in-law alerted authorities. Simon Chand was reportedly experiencing a suspected drug overdose at the time of his arrest, leading ambulance officers to request the removal of handcuffs. He was then taken to Westmead Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The New South Wales Police have since declared a critical incident, leading to an investigation conducted by the Auburn Police Area Command under the supervision of the Professional Standards Command and the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

This incident resonates with ongoing concerns over domestic violence, a significant issue in both Fiji and Australia, often spotlighting the need for more effective preventative measures and support for victims. In Fiji, nearly two out of three women encounter physical or sexual violence throughout their lives, prompting the establishment of frameworks such as the Fiji National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against All Women and Girls, launched in June 2023, to combat this pervasive problem. This framework emphasizes community engagement, awareness, and the establishment of supportive and safe environments for women and girls.

Despite the somber circumstances, this tragic event serves as a critical reminder of the importance of fostering community support systems and raising awareness about domestic violence. It underscores the urgent need for collective action to protect vulnerable individuals and to promote healthier, safer environments for all families.
