Tonya and Tyler Raaf from Holton experienced a harrowing episode when they rushed their 13-year-old daughter, Tinley, to Holton Community Hospital on November 29. Tinley was deeply lethargic, had trouble speaking, and was struggling to remain awake. Her mother, Tonya Raaf, described how it felt as if Tinley was looking through people rather than making eye contact.
Tragically, shortly after arriving at the hospital, Tinley lapsed into a coma and was subsequently transferred to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Overland Park, where she remained in the coma for five days before waking up.
Once Tinley regained consciousness on Thursday, she had the incredible opportunity to meet pop superstar Taylor Swift, something that brought considerable joy to her recovery journey. Tinley, a devoted Swift fan, expressed her delight in speaking with the artist.
The eighth-grader was later diagnosed with meningitis and encephalitis caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, according to a GoFundMe account set up by friends of the Raaf family. Her recovery process commenced swiftly; she began speaking the day after waking up and was eating shortly afterward. For the last two weeks, Tonya has been by Tinley’s side in the hospital, while Tyler has been managing home life with their 11-year-old son, Tye, making daily journeys to visit Tinley.
“It’s been a scary roller coaster of a ride,” said Tyler Raaf, expressing immense gratitude for the support they have received throughout this ordeal. The family hopes to return home before the holiday season.
The meeting with Taylor Swift was a touching experience for the Raaf family. The Grammy-winning artist, who has been spotted at various Kansas City Chiefs games due to her relationship with tight end Travis Kelce, interacted with several children during her hospital visit. With Tinley, Swift discussed her favorite Chiefs players, including Kelce and Patrick Mahomes, and dedicated five minutes to making a meaningful connection with her by signing a copy of her new “Eras Tour” book for her.
In a beautiful and thoughtful gesture, Swift sent a wrapped gift to Tinley the following morning— a Dyson airwrap blow dryer, along with a handwritten note that read: “T, in case Santa doesn’t come through … love, Taylor.” This act deeply touched Tonya Raaf, who highlighted the personal significance of the gift, noting it was far from a common present, showcasing Swift’s genuine thoughtfulness.
Tonya also expressed her admiration for Swift’s interactions with the children, noting how the artist made each child feel special by engaging with them on their level.
This uplifting story not only highlights a family’s remarkable journey through a difficult time, but it also underscores the impact of compassion and kindness, as exemplified by Taylor Swift’s heartfelt support. The Raaf family looks forward to reuniting and celebrating the holidays at home, cherishing the connections and kindness that emerged during this challenging period.
