Retailers in Suva are bracing for a last-minute rush in festive shopping, as consumers increasingly tend to postpone their purchases until the final days leading up to celebrations. Jitesh Patel, President of the Suva Retailer Association, conveyed a positive outlook despite a slight decline in activity compared to previous years. He anticipates a surge in sales as the holiday season progresses.
Patel noted, “So far, it’s been a little bit of a downturn, but we expect this week it will go up.” The trend of last-minute shopping has become more prevalent in recent years, and retailers are poised for an influx of customers eager to finalize their holiday plans.
While the holiday season had a slower start, there is optimism that a spike in last-minute buying will help offset initial sales lag. Patel emphasized the significant responsibilities of retailers to provide fair pricing and maintain ethical practices, particularly during high-demand periods. “We do have a responsibility to our people, our customers, consumers,” he explained, underlining the importance of adhering to rules and regulations within the industry.
Encouraging consumer participation, Patel reassured shoppers that businesses are committed to legal and ethical standards. “We want consumers to come out and do your shopping, whatever you like,” he said, inviting shoppers to engage with local retailers.
The call for ethical conduct during the festive period was echoed by Diren Kapadia, Director of Brij Lal, who highlighted that a business’s reputation can be precarious during peak shopping times. “It’s reputation at stake,” he stated, stressing the necessity of compliance with consumer protection laws to maintain customer trust and standing.
Retailers are dedicating efforts to remind the public that fair pricing, honest advertising, and ethical business practices will be top priorities, even amid the busy holiday shopping season.
