Margaret Tabunakawai, the Project Manager for WWF-Pacific’s Empowering Voices Project, underscores the importance of unity among Pacific nations and organizations for the success of COP30.
Tabunakawai emphasizes the urgent need to empower grassroots voices to effectively communicate the severe challenges confronting the region to international stakeholders. She emphasizes that the groundwork begins in Suva, where shared advocacy goals are developed, and unity is fostered to ensure a cohesive journey towards Belem. The workshop underscores the power of solidarity, proposing that a united Pacific voice can effectively deliver a powerful message to the world. Solutions must be deeply rooted in the region’s lived experiences, cultural heritage, and realities. Scheduled from November 10 to 21, 2025, COP30 aims to tackle pressing climate issues facing the Pacific Islands, notably rising sea levels and the increasing frequency of natural disasters.
This effort is in line with ongoing discussions among Pacific leaders who have consistently advocated for a strong, unified presence on international platforms. Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister, Biman Prasad, has highlighted the devastating impacts of climate change on the region and called for robust political leadership and regional cohesion, particularly regarding funding for loss and damage.
Baron Waqa, Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, supports the assertion that Pacific nations must control their climate narrative. He advocates for a strategic blend of traditional knowledge and modern methods to bolster climate resilience. The Pacific’s endeavors to enhance climate financing initiatives and implement resilient solutions resonate with commitments outlined in prior climate forums.
