A woman from Suva, Zoe Maharaj, has pleaded not guilty to four drug-related charges this morning at the Suva Magistrates Court. The charges against her include unlawful possession of illicit drugs, possession of property believed to be proceeds of crime, possession of breaking implements, and unlawful possession of explosives.

The allegations involve substances found inside the vehicle she was in, which tested positive for methamphetamine. Additionally, authorities reportedly located an explosive device, a grenade, in her possession. The police prosecution indicated that they are waiting for a military explosives expert to conduct an analysis of the grenade before proceeding further.

Given the situation, the prosecution asked for additional time to procure the expert’s report. Maharaj’s lawyer, Isimeli Keteca, argued in court that detaining Maharaj may be infringing on her constitutional rights, suggesting that the charges related to explosives remain unsubstantiated for the time being.

In response to a request for bail, Magistrate Joseph Daurewa opted to exercise caution, indicating that he would make a decision regarding bail only after he has received all pertinent information. The case has been adjourned and is scheduled for a bail hearing on the 9th of next month.

This case highlights ongoing concerns surrounding drug-related offenses and possession of explosives, emphasizing the legal complexities involved in handling such serious charges. The justice system will continue to navigate these challenges, aiming for a fair resolution.
