The Suva Retailers Association has issued a stern warning to local businesses to avoid price gouging during the back-to-school shopping season. Association President Jitesh Patel addressed concerns related to potential unfair pricing and expressed confidence that most businesses in Suva are conscious of their pricing strategies while adhering to the official price controls established by the Fiji Competition & Consumer Commission.
Patel noted the competitiveness in the market, stating, “We have seen that businesses in the city are very mindful of the pricing and the competition is very high, so I don’t think anybody would be price gouging because customers are smart, looking around town and they’re checking prices before they buy.” This reflects a keenly competitive environment where consumers are informed and actively seek the best values.
He also warned that businesses engaging in price gouging would face repercussions, as customers are likely to take their business elsewhere to find better prices. “It’s wrong to do that because you would be the loser in the end,” he said, underscoring the necessity of fair pricing for success in today’s market.
In addition, Patel urged shoppers to plan their purchases in advance to avoid the chaos often created by last-minute shopping. Although many stores will extend their hours, he noted that waiting until the last minute could result in crowded and stressful shopping conditions as the school year approaches.
The proactive stance of the Suva Retailers Association not only advocates for fair pricing but also cultivates a community-oriented shopping experience that benefits both local businesses and consumers during this critical preparation period for the upcoming school year. This initiative not only helps prevent inflationary pressures but also encourages an understanding and collaborative environment within the community, paving the way for a successful back-to-school season.
