The Suva Retailers Association has issued a strong warning to local businesses to refrain from price gouging amid back-to-school shopping. In response to concerns raised over potential unfair pricing, association President Jitesh Patel highlighted that most businesses in Suva are aware of their pricing strategies and are adhering to the official price controls set by the Fiji Competition & Consumer Commission.

Patel remarked, “We have seen that businesses in the city are very mindful of the pricing and the competition is very high, so I don’t think anybody would be price gauging because customers are smart, looking around town and they’re checking prices before they buy.” This highlights a competitive market environment, where consumers are savvy and seek the best deals.

He further emphasized the repercussions for businesses that do engage in price gouging, indicating that they would ultimately suffer losses as customers will turn to competitors offering better prices. “It’s wrong to do that because you would be the loser in the end,” he cautioned, reiterating the importance of competitive pricing to thrive in the current market conditions.

Additionally, Patel encouraged shoppers to avoid procrastinating on their purchases, suggesting that while many stores extend their hours, the rush of last-minute shoppers may create hectic conditions as the school season starts. By planning ahead, consumers can ensure they have access to the products they need without the stress of crowded stores.

This proactive approach from the Suva Retailers Association not only promotes fair pricing practices but also fosters a community spirit where both businesses and consumers can benefit from a more cooperative shopping environment as school preparations get underway.
