Suva city radiated festive energy as last-minute shoppers navigated its bustling streets, coinciding with the arrival of a cruise ship at Suva Port, which brought in a wave of visitors just in time for the holiday season.
However, amid the city’s excitement, it was at the Suva Market where the genuine spirit of Christmas was most profoundly felt. Shoppers and vendors alike shared inspiring stories that highlighted themes of sacrifice, faith, and family connections.
One such story came from Titilia Lalabalavu of Serea, Naitasiri, who woke up before dawn to sell her produce. Her commitment stemmed from the desire to ensure her family could celebrate Christmas together. “I’m here to sell because of family commitments,” Titilia remarked. “Tomorrow we will celebrate together. Even though we live in different places, Christmas always brings us together.” Her reflection spoke to the silent sacrifices made by many families, who endure long hours and hard work in anticipation of a joyful reunion.
Samisoni Cagiseru, a 58-year-old wheelbarrow operator from Waisasavu, Naitasiri, also contributed to the market’s vibrant atmosphere. Having spent years helping customers transport their purchases, he expressed gratitude for his work that has supported his children through the years. He shared a thought-provoking interaction with a patron, discussing the deeper significance of Jesus’ birth, emphasizing that “Jesus must be born from within your soul.”
Samisoni approached his work with dignity, valuing each dollar offered to him, regardless of the amount. With a message meant to resonate in homes across Suva, he poignantly urged, “Let us not make our mothers cry this Christmas,” reinforcing that the holiday should be celebrated with kindness and respect.
Echoing Samisoni’s sentiments, Titilia encouraged parents to cherish time with their children during this special season. “Let’s spend this Christmas with them. Let’s protect our families, especially as we welcome our Lord Jesus tomorrow,” she said, reinforcing the importance of family unity and love during the holiday season.
This Christmas, the stories from Suva Market remind us that the true essence of the holiday lies not just in celebration but in the love and respect we show each other as families come together.
