The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has announced that a joint inspection took place yesterday morning in response to reports of a fuel slick spotted in Suva Harbour, specifically near the beacon opposite the China Club.
According to the Ministry, inspectors teamed up with officials from Fiji Ports Limited to conduct an on-site boat inspection and utilize drone surveillance. This initiative aimed to evaluate the scope of the pollution and determine its possible source.
As often occurs during such incidents, the Ministry noted that the fuel slick dispersed with the incoming tide. Ongoing investigations will monitor the area closely for any further signs of pollution.
Following this incident, the Ministry has issued a clear reminder to all businesses and vessel operators to be more cautious when managing fuel, oil, and other hazardous substances. This proactive stance is essential for preventing waterway pollution and protecting the marine environment.
The event underscores the critical need for environmental stewardship and reinforces the importance of remaining vigilant in preserving natural resources. Authorities are dedicated to taking necessary actions to ensure the health of Suva Harbour and its surrounding ecosystems, moving forward with a commitment to safeguarding the environment for future generations.
