Suva Grassroots 7s Could Decide Fiji Sevens Dubai Fate

Fiji Sports Council CEO Gilbert Vakalalabure has announced that the Fiji Airways men’s 7s team will participate in the upcoming FSC Grassroots 7s competition, which is set to take place next week at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This significant event aims to provide a platform for local teams to compete while also serving as a crucial selection ground for Fiji’s national team ahead of the Dubai 7s tournament.

The announcement was made during a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony with the Agriculture Marketing, which will act as sponsors for the Grassroots 7s tournament. Vakalalabure emphasized the importance of this competition in helping head coach Osea Kolinisau finalize his roster for the imminent Dubai 7s legs. “This sevens competition will give the opportunity to the Fiji rugby union to select their best team that goes to Dubai,” he remarked, highlighting the tournament’s dual purpose of fostering local talent while also preparing the national squad.

The Grassroots 7s tournament will feature 16 teams, including the Fiji 7s, Dominion Brothers, and the FSC Grassroots 7s team, giving 15 local teams the chance to measure their abilities against the national side. The Fiji Sports Council will announce further details about the tournament soon.

This initiative not only underscores the commitment to grassroots rugby development in Fiji but also builds anticipation among fans for a thrilling display of talent and sportsmanship. As the Fiji men’s 7s team gears up for international competition, there is hope that the combination of local competition and national representation will inspire both players and supporters alike.
