Suva Expands CCTV Network Tied to Totogo Police Station Ahead of Festive Season

Businesses in Suva are enhancing their security protocols as they implement an additional 20 CCTV cameras linked directly to the Totogo Police Station this week. This initiative, confirmed by the Suva Retailers Association, is a collaboration with the Fiji Police Force aimed at bolstering safety in the capital city ahead of the bustling festive season.

Jitesh Patel, the Association President, acknowledged the challenges faced in coordinating with various stakeholders but expressed satisfaction with the progress made. “We have 20 plus that we have put up, and by this week, all will be connected to Totogo. We are running a cable that will connect them to the police,” he stated.

In parallel, Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has been encouraging local municipalities and retail organizations across Fiji to work together in enhancing safety and security throughout the nation. He assured that the police operations center is functioning effectively, adding, “The operation center is well and good and we are monitoring all cameras connected to us.”

Additionally, the police have engaged with municipal administrators nationwide to brainstorm methods for improving safety in towns and cities. Commissioner Tudravu reiterated that public safety remains the top priority for the Fiji Police Force, urging everyone to collaborate in keeping their communities secure.

This proactive security approach in Suva builds upon previous efforts, such as the announcement regarding the installation of 40 advanced CCTV cameras across the city’s central business district. As detailed by Suva City Council Chairman Tevita Boseiwaqa, these new systems will utilize high-tech capabilities similar to those in other parts of Australia, designed to detect known offenders and ensure extensive coverage of major commercial areas from Nabukalou Bridge to Walu Bay Bridge.

Both of these initiatives highlight a broader commitment by the Fiji Police to modernize policing strategies, integrating advanced surveillance tools to enhance crime detection and prevention. With optimism within the community about the potential impact of these measures, business owners and residents alike are hopeful that these growing security enhancements will lead to safer environments and contribute to reduced crime rates in Suva.
