Niraj Surend Prasad has been ordered to remain in custody following his appearance in the Suva Magistrates Court, where he faces charges related to an alleged theft involving an elderly man. Prasad is accused of stealing the ATM card of 86-year-old Malakai Kauwale on January 5, 2026, in Suva.
During the court proceedings, police prosecutor Sergeant Salote Bola requested the denial of bail, citing Prasad’s two prior theft convictions and an ongoing matter involving absconding bail. These concerns contributed to the prosecution’s argument regarding the accused’s potential to comply with future bail conditions.
The case was presided over by Magistrate Charles Ratakele, who noted that Prasad chose to waive his right to legal representation. As a result, Magistrate Ratakele remanded Prasad and scheduled a further hearing for January 12, which will provide Prasad with an opportunity to submit a formal bail application. Until then, he will remain in custody.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges within the legal system concerning theft and the treatment of vulnerable populations, underscoring the need for vigilance in protecting the elderly from such offenses.
