The Suva City Council is actively focusing on upgrading public facilities as part of its dedication to enhancing services for the local community. Ongoing initiatives include the redevelopment of the Raiwaqa Market, improvements to bus terminals, road repairs, and the upkeep of various market and public amenities.

These developments align with the government’s goal to strengthen municipal councils through new financial resources and better operational support. Acting CEO of the Suva City Council, Tevita Boseiwaqa, noted the urgent need to tackle the city’s aging infrastructure, stating, “Most of the existing facilities need to be repaired, need maintenance, or the areas need to be redeveloped. The only major project in place now is the Raiwaqa Market, for which we have awarded the tender and are discussing the way forward.”

The council is prioritizing projects that will directly benefit commuters, vendors, and the public. Recent enhancements include road improvements leading into bus terminals, along with plans for a new shelter dedicated to travelers heading west and north. This initiative is designed to ensure that passengers have access to essential facilities prior to boarding their buses.

Maciu Nalumisa, Minister for Housing and Local Government, highlighted the significance of new funding that will aid in improving service delivery through better equipment. He explained, “The $12.5 million is mainly for the acquisition of machinery such as garbage trucks, collection trucks, compactor trucks, excavators, and other equipment, depending on the needs of each municipality.”

The Ministry will continue to evaluate requirements to ensure that councils are equipped with machinery suited to their specific needs. As the Suva City Council progresses with its phased redevelopment plans across the capital, these efforts represent a forward-thinking approach aimed at creating a more efficient and accessible environment for residents. The focus on modernizing infrastructure is set to greatly enhance the quality of life in Suva, promoting not only functionality but also community engagement.
