A recent incident in Sabeto Village, Nadi, has raised concerns over safety and community trust following the deliberate burning of a family home. The homeowner, Kaliova Saidrodro, believes that a dispute over grass cutting fuel may have led to the horrific event. His family faced adversity after their home was targeted twice within a short span. On December 11, the family managed to douse a fire that was attempted on their property. However, a second attempt a day later saw their home completely engulfed in flames.

Upon returning home on December 13, Mr. Saidrodro discovered the aftermath of the fire, claiming that the perpetrators had initiated the blaze two days prior. “We were able to put out the fire the first time, but when we returned late Friday night, the house was burned to the ground,” he recounted, highlighting the loss of all his family’s possessions.

The family’s situation has now forced them to seek refuge with relatives. Mr. Saidrodro’s mother was devastated to find their home destroyed upon her return from work, a reality that weighs heavily on the family during this challenging period.

Taniela Varo, a neighbor who tried to help during the initial fire, detailed the distressing moment he witnessed the flames. “When I heard crackling sounds, I initially paid no attention. However, the noise intensified, prompting me to check, and that’s when I spotted the fire,” he explained. He recalled attempting to extinguish the flames with a blanket but later noticed evidence suggesting foul play, including an open back door and an unlit mosquito coil.

Frustration is mounting within the community due to perceived inaction from the police regarding the identification of the suspects. Mr. Varo expressed concern, saying, “The police have not come around to arrest the suspects. They are known to the villagers here. It is pathetic the way the police are treating this complaint.”

In response to the situation, West Police Commander SSP Iakobo Vaisewa confirmed that investigations are underway but noted that no arrests have been made as of yet. He stated, “We are still awaiting the two fire reports from the National Fire Authority. The crime scene investigation report will help us determine the cause of the fire.”

As the community comes together to support the Saidrodro family during this trying time, the hope for swift justice and resolution remains strong. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety and community vigilance, as well as the ongoing need for responsive law enforcement in ensuring the well-being of households in Sabeto Village.
