Surprise Keeper Swap Shakes Up U.S. U-20 World Cup Roster

U.S. Soccer has announced a change to its roster for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, with goalkeeper Gavin Beavers stepping in for the originally selected Diego Kochen. Beavers, who plays for Brøndby IF in Denmark, joins the squad following Kochen’s recall by his club, FC Barcelona. FIFA has approved this roster adjustment, as tournament regulations permit player replacements when a club recalls its player.

The U.S. team is set to begin its World Cup journey on September 29 against New Caledonia, followed by matches against France on October 2 and South Africa on October 5. All these Group E matches will take place at Estadio El Teniente in Rancagua, Chile.

Joining Beavers in the goalkeeper lineup are Adam Beaudry from Colorado Rapids and Duran Ferree of San Diego FC. The defensive lineup features players from various clubs, including Seattle Sounders, FC Dallas, and Benfica. The midfield is strengthened by players from clubs like Parma, Columbus Crew, and San Jose Earthquakes. Forwards in the squad come from prestigious teams like Borussia Dortmund and Real Salt Lake City, highlighting the diverse and international experience of this U-20 squad.

This roster change exemplifies the dynamics of international soccer, where clubs may recall players despite their national team duties. The U.S. team remains optimistic as it enters the tournament with a robust mix of experienced and emerging talents, showcasing the depth of soccer development in the United States. As they head into this global competition, the team is determined to perform well and make a significant impact on the world stage.
