“Surging Variant: What You Need to Know About NB.1.8.1”

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated its estimates regarding COVID-19 variants, reporting a significant rise in the proportion of the NB.1.8.1 variant. This variant has increased from 15% to 37% in recent months, closely trailing the LP.8.1 variant, which has been the dominant strain. The World Health Organization (WHO) had previously categorized NB.1.8.1 as a variant under monitoring (VUM) due to its rapid growth.

In addition to NB.1.8.1, the CDC noted a slight increase in the XFG variant, from 6% to 8%. Both of these variants are descendants of the JN.1 Omicron SARS-CoV-2 strain. The rise in NB.1.8.1 has been linked to increases in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in various Asian countries. However, the WHO advisory board has indicated that while this variant is gaining ground, it appears to be only minimally more immune-evasive than its predecessor, LP.8.1.

In Europe, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has also reported a gradual uptick in COVID-19 activity, although doctor visits remain consistent with levels seen in previous years during this period. Importantly, there has been no significant increase in severe cases like hospitalizations or ICU admissions. Dr. Eduardo Colzani of the ECDC reassured that NB.1.8.1 does not currently present a greater threat than other Omicron variants. However, he mentioned concerns about the waning population immunity, particularly among older adults and those with underlying health conditions, due to low SARS-CoV-2 activity during the winter months.

Currently, COVID-19 activity in the United States remains low, as indicated by CDC data showing wastewater SARS-CoV-2 detections at minimal levels, with slightly elevated figures in the western regions of the country.

While the rising variant proportions signal ongoing monitoring and vigilance, health experts remain optimistic about the resilience of current vaccines and the overall management of COVID-19 risks. This evolving situation highlights the importance of public health measures and staying informed about variants as they emerge.
