Throughout the year, Ryan Hastings, a University of Mary Washington alumnus and 20-year Army veteran, is dedicated to supporting veterans, active-duty service members, and their families by providing essential resources and guidance to help them reach their educational and career aspirations.
Hastings, who completed BLS degrees in history and communication in 2016 and in leadership and management studies in 2018, serves as the main contact for military-affiliated students through UMW’s Veterans Resource Center. He provides information on a range of veteran-specific benefits and services.
In November, Hastings plays a pivotal role in organizing activities for Veterans Day, including an early-morning flag-raising ceremony and a celebratory luncheon, all aimed at honoring the commitment and sacrifices of veterans. Additional events will take place later in the week, such as the Small Business Development Center’s presentation of the Veteran Small Business of the Year Award and an event at the Dahlgren Campus organized by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division.
Hastings’ commitment to enhancing the experience of military-affiliated students continues with his involvement in the Student Veterans Association, which strives to create a supportive community for these students. “If you’re a veteran looking to recapture that sense of camaraderie, I encourage you to join,” he emphasizes, highlighting how the group nurtures a space where veterans can reconnect and find belonging. The Veterans Resource Center offers a welcoming environment for students to study, socialize, or simply relax.
Mary Washington provides various avenues of support for military-connected students throughout the year, including multiple benefit programs such as the Montgomery GI Bill and the Veterans Educational Assistance Program. Hastings also serves as the school certifying official responsible for confirming benefits for students in various programs, including those in bachelor’s, nursing, and education courses.
As part of its commitment to honoring veterans and facilitating the success of military-affiliated students, UMW will host several events on Veterans Day, including a flag-raising ceremony featuring the Mountain View High School Marine JROTC Color Team, and a Veterans Luncheon at the Cedric Rucker University Center.
On November 13, UMW’s Dahlgren campus will conduct a Veterans Day observance open to veterans and their families, as well as members of the local community. Furthermore, the Veteran Small Business of the Year ceremony will occur the same day at the Jepson Alumni Executive Center, providing valuable resources and insights on funding and business operation for veterans and their spouses.
