Supermoon, King Tides and Gusty Winds Spark Beach Hazards This Week

Thick clouds swept across the region Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, leading to misty conditions and light rainfall in some areas, with totals reaching only a few hundredths of an inch. As the evening progresses, winds are expected to shift offshore, bringing gusty conditions to valleys, foothills, and mountain communities through Friday. The peak of these winds will occur Thursday morning, with easterly gusts forecasted to reach 25 to 40 mph, and isolated areas may experience gusts up to 55 mph.

Humidity levels will decrease to between 10% and 25%. However, the recent rainfall and the lush greenery resulting from it should help lessen fire risks in the area.

Meanwhile, residents are also gearing up for the last supermoon of the year, set to light up the night sky this Thursday. This celestial event will coincide with King Tides along the coast, prompting a Beach Hazards Statement in effect until 10 a.m. Friday. Waves of 4 to 6 feet, strong rip currents, and potential tidal overflow are expected during the highest tides at 7:34 a.m. Thursday and 8:18 a.m. Friday, both around 7.1 feet. Beachfront areas, including boardwalks, nearby side streets, and parking lots, may face flooding during these peaks.

In terms of temperature, a slight warming trend is anticipated over the weekend, with highs reaching the mid-60s to low-70s along the coast, low to mid-70s inland and in desert regions, and mid-50s to low-60s in the mountain areas. The following week will bring even warmer conditions, with another round of Santa Ana winds predicted by Tuesday.

Now is an opportune moment for residents to clear defensible space around their homes to prepare for any potential fire hazards.

Thursday’s expected high temperatures are as follows:
Coastal areas: 66-72°F
Inland regions: 70-75°F
Mountains: 45-62°F
Deserts: 67-69°F
