The live-action launch of the new DC Universe has achieved unprecedented success, according to filmmaker James Gunn. He shared on social media that the teaser trailer for “Superman” garnered over 250 million views within its first day, making it the most viewed and most discussed trailer in the history of both DC and Warner Bros.
Gunn expressed his gratitude, stating, “Krypto really did take us home: With over 250 million views and a million social posts, ‘Superman’ is officially the most viewed and the most talked about trailer in the history of both DC and Warner Bros. We’re incredibly grateful and, most of all, excited to share this movie with you in July. Happy Holidays!”
The impact of the Superman teaser is remarkable, surpassing the launches of some of this year’s major releases. For instance, the trailer for “Joker: Folie à Deux” amassed 167 million views in its first 24 hours, while “Inside Out 2,” which is currently the highest-grossing film of the year with $1.6 billion in box office revenue, had 157 million views on its trailer launch. Although Marvel’s “Deadpool and Wolverine” trailer still holds the all-time record with 365 million views, the Superman teaser’s performance is a strong indicator of its popularity.
The trailer gives audiences their first glimpse of David Corenswet as the new Superman, alongside Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and introduces various heroes in the new DC Universe, such as Krypto the Superdog, Hawkgirl, Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific, and Metamorpho. It also hints at a romantic storyline between Superman and Lois Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan.
Gunn emphasized a commitment to embracing Superman’s extensive mythology in this film, stating, “He has friends who are other superheroes. He has people he doesn’t get along with as well who are other superheroes. We’re including many beloved elements from the Superman comics that haven’t been seen much in films, especially in a grounded way, which is what I hope we’ve created.”
Excitement is building for Gunn’s “Superman,” set to release in theaters on July 11, promising to delve deeply into the character’s rich lore.
This impressive view count not only highlights the fervent interest in Superman but also ignites anticipation for the future of the DC Universe under new leadership. With Gunn at the helm, fans are hopeful for a fresh and engaging portrayal of superhero stories that resonate with long-standing comic traditions.
