The Phoenix Suns have had a tumultuous season so far, boasting a 14–10 record and making it to the quarterfinals of the NBA Cup. However, their journey took a dramatic turn when they faced the Oklahoma City Thunder, ultimately suffering the most devastating defeat in franchise history.
Missing star guard Devin Booker was a significant blow, and the impact was evident as the Suns struggled to meet their usual standards. Dillon Brooks, one of the team’s standout players this season, expressed deep disappointment in his performance following the game. Brooks has been pivotal for the Suns, averaging 21.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game, but against the Thunder, he felt he did not bring his best effort. In 26 minutes of play, he scored 16 points, yet lamented his softer approach during the game.
Brooks stated, “I played kind of soft today. I should’ve been mixing it up more instead of Grayson (Allen). They called two quick ones (in the first quarter). That was weak. I got to be better for my teammates.” His frustration was palpable after the game, reflecting a desire to lead more effectively in the absence of key players.
The Suns faced relentless pressure from the defending NBA champions, who showcased their dominance in every facet of the game. The Thunder’s superior execution on the court was highlighted by their stifling defense, which currently holds the best rating in the league. In contrast, Phoenix struggled, committing 21 turnovers that yielded 34 points for Oklahoma City.
The Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered a standout performance with 28 points, supported by Chet Holmgren’s 24 points and strong defensive presence. The outcome was a staggering 138-89 victory for Oklahoma City, marking a historic 49-point loss for Phoenix, with no player from the Suns scoring over 20 points—the leading scorer being Brooks with 16.
Looking ahead, the Suns will need to regroup quickly as they head back home to face the Los Angeles Lakers in an effort to bounce back from this setback. While the recent loss was a tough pill to swallow, the team still has the opportunity to learn and improve as they aim for success for the remainder of the season.
