Suns Face Offseason Setbacks But Stay Hopeful for Summer League Resurgence

The Phoenix Suns faced a challenging game during their NBA Summer League matchup, suffering a 98-80 defeat against the Atlanta Hawks on July 13. The Suns were notably shorthanded, with key players Khaman Maluach, Ryan Dunn, and Rasheer Fleming yet to make their debuts. Head coach DeMarre Carroll shared that they intended to manage the playing times of Dunn and Maluach to avoid back-to-back play.

In this game, Oso Ighodaro emerged as a standout performer, leading the team with 18 points and contributing significantly with nine rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Also making notable contributions were Koby Brea with 15 points and Yuri Collins with 12.

However, the Suns struggled offensively, shooting only 39.2% from the field, and found themselves trailing by as much as 22 points. This loss brought their Summer League record to 1-1 following an earlier win against the Wizards.

Coach Carroll provided an encouraging update on Fleming’s condition, stating he is “trending” in the right direction regarding his right knee soreness, hinting at a possible return in the upcoming games.

In addition to individual performances, the Suns showcased a collaborative offense during the game, including effective baseline cuts reminiscent of strategies employed by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the past season.

The Suns are expected to face the Sacramento Kings next, and with improving health among their roster, there is hope for a stronger performance in upcoming games. If Fleming can return to the court soon, it could significantly enhance the team’s dynamics and overall performance.

As the Summer League progresses, the Suns continue to evaluate their players and develop their strategies, laying the groundwork for a promising 2025-26 season. Fans can remain optimistic about the team’s potential as they navigate through this early stage of rebuilding and development.
