Suns’ China Trip Sparks Opening-Night Hype as Green and Williams Prepare to Debut

Phoenix Suns head coach Jordan Ott recently shared his enthusiasm about the team’s week-long trip to China, calling it a “pretty cool experience” that was highlighted by two competitive games against the Brooklyn Nets. “We’re very, very grateful,” Ott remarked, reflecting on how basketball has brought opportunities to the team. For many players, this trip marked their first experience in China, showcasing the global reach of the sport.

While the Suns enjoyed their time overseas, they have little time to dwell on the memories as they face a quick turnaround for their final preseason game on Tuesday, Oct. 14, against the Los Angeles Lakers. Scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Mortgage Matchup Center, the game will be televised locally on Arizona’s Family Sports.

In China, the Suns competed in two matchups against the Nets, achieving a narrow victory of 132-127 in an overtime thriller on Oct. 10, but succumbing to a close 111-109 loss in their subsequent game on Oct. 12. The team now holds a 2-1 record in preseason play.

After flying nearly 13 hours back to Phoenix, the Suns will complete their four-game preseason slate at home against the Lakers, whom they previously defeated 103-81 on Oct. 3 in Palm Desert.

Significantly, the Suns have yet to see the contributions of key offseason acquisitions Jalen Green and Mark Williams, who are anticipated to make their debuts in the regular-season opener on Oct. 22 against the Sacramento Kings. Green has been recuperating from a left hamstring strain sustained during training camp but has been active in practice and pregame workouts. “His goal is still the same,” Ott stated regarding Green’s aspirations for opening night.

Meanwhile, Williams has been on a structured training regimen since joining the Suns on July 1, focusing on building strength and flexibility to maximize his contributions throughout the season. The 7-foot center has previously played a total of 106 games over his first three NBA seasons and expressed confidence about his readiness: “I’ll be playing opening night,” he said before participating in the game against the Lakers on Oct. 3.

As the team gears up for the regular season, excitement is brewing among fans and players alike, promising a competitive season ahead for the Phoenix Suns.
