Reliable electricity has finally been established for the residents of Vanuabalavu, as the Lomaloma Subdivisional Hospital has transitioned to a new solar energy system, effectively putting an end to years of reliance on malfunctioning generators and regular power outages. This monumental project, funded by Cure Kids Fiji in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MOHMS), represents the largest solar installation in a healthcare facility in Fiji’s history.
The initiative began with initial scoping conducted by CBS Power Solutions and the MOHMS Biomedical team, culminating in a final assessment completed in June, followed by implementation in recent weeks. The new solar-powered system guarantees a continuous electricity supply, which significantly enhances healthcare services not only at Lomaloma Hospital but also to surrounding nursing stations and health centers across the island.
Dr. Krishan Prasad, the Acting Subdivisional Medical Officer of Lomaloma, expressed confidence in the upgrade’s immediate and lasting benefits for patient care. He remarked that the new system will reduce dependency on oxygen cylinders since oxygen concentrator machines can be utilized more effectively. Moreover, it has the added advantage of decreasing carbon emissions generated from diesel-powered generators.
Dr. Prasad shared his heartfelt gratitude to Cure Kids Fiji, MOHMS, and the CBS Power Solutions team for selecting Lomaloma as the first Subdivisional Hospital in Fiji to receive solar energy, calling this advancement a transformative step for healthcare provision in the Lau Group. As solar energy projects continue to expand across the nation, it shows a robust commitment to renewable energy sources which not only improves healthcare but is beneficial for the environment as well.
Fiji’s broader strategy for enhancing energy access in remote areas is underscored by similar initiatives such as the solar home system project, which aims to provide over 900 households with renewable energy solutions, reaching regions like Lau, Kadavu, and Malolo. This multi-faceted approach toward renewable energy represents a commitment to fostering sustainable development, promoting improved living standards, and ensuring that even the most isolated communities receive essential services.
The successful installation at Lomaloma Hospital symbolizes hope for a sustainable and empowered future for all Fijians, illuminating the path forward with clean, reliable energy through innovative and collaborative efforts. As more projects like this emerge, they pave the way for enhanced healthcare, education, and overall quality of life throughout the islands, marking a hopeful chapter in Fiji’s commitment to sustainable development.
