Sun Devils Soar: Arizona State Clinches Big 12 Title and Playoff Spot!

In an impressive showcase of talent, the Arizona State Sun Devils triumphed over the Iowa State Cyclones 45-19 in the Conference championship game held in Arlington, Texas. This victory not only secures Arizona State’s place in the 12-team College Football Playoff, but it also marks a significant achievement as the Sun Devils clinch the Big 12 title in their inaugural season in the conference.

Star running back Cam Skattebo delivered a standout performance, rushing for 170 yards and scoring two touchdowns while also catching a touchdown pass. Skattebo’s exceptional play has helped propel the Sun Devils to a six-game winning streak, finishing the season with an impressive 11-2 record.

Despite the loss, Iowa State had made history earlier in the season, achieving its first 10-win record in the program’s 133-year existence. The Cyclones started strong but faltered in the second half. A series of turnovers allowed Arizona State to seize the momentum and control of the game. Freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt made the most of these opportunities, finding fellow players in the end zone while completing 12 of 17 passes for 219 yards.

Throughout the game, Arizona State executed several significant plays, including a remarkable 28-yard run on the very first offensive snap and a 53-yard run just before halftime by Skattebo, showcasing his elusive running style and ability to break tackles. These big plays were a major factor in the Sun Devils’ commanding lead.

Rocco Becht led Iowa State, throwing for 214 yards and two touchdowns, continuing a streak of scoring in 17 consecutive games. However, the Cyclones struggled to match Arizona State’s momentum, especially in the first half, where they managed just a single big play.

As a testament to his performance, Cam Skattebo was named the Most Outstanding Player of the game. His single-season school record of 2,074 yards from scrimmage, which includes 1,568 rushing and 506 receiving yards, underscores his dynamic versatility and significant impact on the field.

The Sun Devils are heading into the postseason with high hopes and momentum, as their performance marked a remarkable year of growth and achievement under 34-year-old head coach Kenny Dillingham. The future looks bright for Arizona State as they aim for success in the upcoming playoffs.
