In a spectacular display of talent and strategy, the 12th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils triumphed over the 16th-ranked Iowa State Cyclones, winning the 2024 Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship with a score of 45-19. Cam Skattebo emerged as the star of the match, showcasing his exceptional skills by rushing for 170 yards and scoring two touchdowns, alongside catching another touchdown pass.
Under the leadership of head coach Kenny Dillingham, Arizona State finished their first season in the Big 12 with a remarkable record of 11-2 and secured the conference title. Their victory added to their impressive six-game winning streak.
Iowa State, which marked a significant moment in its history with its first 10-win season in 133 years, struggled to maintain momentum after halftime. Trailing 24-10, they fell victim to crucial turnovers in their own territory, allowing Arizona State to capitalize and score touchdowns via freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt.
Skattebo’s performance was punctuated by explosive plays, including a notable 28-yard run right from the start and a highlight reel of evasive maneuvers that showcased his skill. His impressive record of 2,074 yards from scrimmage stands as a single-season achievement for the school.
Despite setbacks, Iowa State’s Rocco Becht continued to display resilience, throwing a touchdown in his 17th consecutive game and completing 21 of 35 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns. His efforts, including an early touchdown to Carson Hansen, momentarily gave Iowa State a lead before Arizona State seized control.
The Sun Devils exhibited offensive prowess with multiple substantial plays, highlighted by Leavitt’s connections with his receivers. Their ability to deliver big plays was evident as they racked up six plays over 20 yards in the first half alone.
In recognition of his outstanding performance, Cam Skattebo was awarded the Most Outstanding Player of the championship.
