Sun Devils Shock No. 16 Utah in Thrilling Upset!

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State’s head coach Kenny Dillingham celebrated in an adrenaline-fueled moment, joining students in a jubilant mosh pit following the Sun Devils’ 27-19 triumph over No. 16 Utah on Friday night. A year after a challenging first season marred by injuries, Dillingham’s team is making a strong impression in the Big 12.

Arizona State (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) achieved its best start since 2019, claiming a significant victory despite losing quarterback Sam Leavitt for much of the second quarter. The standout performance from running back Cam Skattebo played a crucial role in the win, as he amassed 158 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

In a remarkable play during the third quarter, Skattebo broke multiple tackles before sprinting 50 yards for a touchdown. He further secured the victory with a 47-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, showcasing his explosive talent. “We beat the No. 16 team in the country,” Skattebo declared. “Who says we can’t beat anybody else?”

On the other hand, Utah (4-2, 1-2) struggled in the return of quarterback Cameron Rising, who had missed three games due to a finger injury. Rising’s performance was hindered by both the hand injury and a leg injury sustained early in the game. He threw three interceptions and completed 16 of 37 passes for 209 yards, acknowledging, “We just weren’t able to move it because of that.”

Utah failed to capitalize on numerous opportunities, scoring only one touchdown in seven trips inside Arizona State’s 30-yard line. Rising’s mistakes included an interception at Arizona State’s 9-yard line and a turnover on downs in the fourth quarter. The Utes settled for field goals on four occasions, with the final opportunity stifled by a pass-interference penalty.

Micah Bernard led Utah’s offense with 129 rushing yards and a touchdown. Utah coach Kyle Whittingham expressed concern over the team’s struggles in the red zone, stating, “As long as we continue to have our woes in the red zone, we may not win another game.”

In a standout individual performance, Arizona State linebacker Caleb McCullough registered 12 tackles, 1.5 for a loss, and two interceptions, including a game-clinching pick in the fourth quarter. Dillingham praised McCullough for his perseverance through tough seasons, emphasizing the significance of his contributions.

As for the implications of this game, Skattebo’s versatility and the improved defense could lead Arizona State to a potential ranking, while Utah might fall from the AP Top 25 after suffering its second consecutive loss.

Looking ahead, Utah will host TCU next Saturday, while Arizona State will face Cincinnati on the same day.
