Sun Devils Shine Bright: Arizona State Claims Big 12 Championship in Style

In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, the 12th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils triumphed over No. 16 Iowa State with a decisive 45-19 victory in the 2024 Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship held in Arlington, Texas. Cam Skattebo was a standout player, rushing for 170 yards and scoring two touchdowns, along with a touchdown reception, cementing his status as the Most Outstanding Player of the game.

The Sun Devils, led by their 34-year-old head coach Kenny Dillingham, showcased their resilience in their first season competing in the Big 12, finishing with a commendable 11-2 record. Arizona State’s winning streak has now reached six games, underscoring their strong momentum heading into the postseason.

Iowa State entered the game having already achieved a historic milestone with their first 10-win season in 133 years. However, after trailing 24-10, the Cyclones struggled with turnovers that significantly shifted the game’s dynamics, allowing the Sun Devils to capitalize. Freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt threw three touchdown passes, two of which were caught by Xavier Guillory in a remarkable 71-second span, further solidifying Arizona State’s lead.

Skattebo’s remarkable performance included a 28-yard run on the game’s opening play and two short touchdown runs, showcasing his ability to generate substantial yardage even in cramped situations. His 2,074 yards from scrimmage for the season—1,568 rushing and 506 receiving—set a new single-season record for the school.

Despite being without their injured star receiver Jordyn Tyson, Arizona State effectively executed their game plan, registering six plays over 20 yards in the first half alone. In comparison, Iowa State’s longest play in the first half reached just 19 yards. Cyclones quarterback Rocco Becht extended his streak of throwing a touchdown in consecutive games, completing 21 of 35 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns.

Overall, Arizona State’s victory not only marks their championship win but also embodies the fruits of hard work and determination. The Sun Devils’ outstanding performance in their inaugural Big 12 season leaves fans hopeful for a bright future as they build on this success and aim for further achievements in years to come.

This game stands as an inspiring reminder of how determination and teamwork can lead to remarkable outcomes, especially in the world of collegiate sports.
