Sun Devils Rise: Arizona State Claims Big 12 Glory and Playoff Spot

In a stunning display of dominance, the 15th-ranked Arizona State University football team secured a decisive 45-19 victory over 16th-ranked Iowa State, claiming their first Big 12 championship and earning a spot in the College Football Playoff. With an impressive record of 11-2, the Sun Devils aim for a spot among the top four seeds for the playoff, despite being initially projected at No. 12.

ASU coach Kenny Dillingham cited past precedents set by the CFP selection committee, particularly concerning the impact of quarterback injuries on ranking decisions. He argued that, despite one loss occurring when starting quarterback Sam Leavitt was sidelined, Arizona State’s achievements, including victories against four ranked teams and winning the Big 12 title, warrant higher playoff consideration. Dillingham expressed confidence that the team deserves a first-round bye and to host a playoff game.

This season was especially remarkable, as the Sun Devils, who were predicted to finish last in the 16-team Big 12 after a disappointing previous season (3-9), achieved an unprecedented feat by becoming the first team to win a power conference championship in their inaugural season since Virginia Tech in 2004.

The game featured standout performances, particularly from running back Cam Skattebo, who had a remarkable first half with 140 yards and two touchdowns from just 10 carries, including an impressive series of long runs. Skattebo ended the game with 170 yards, and Leavitt contributed significantly, completing 12 of 17 passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns.

After the game, Skattebo confidently stated his case for Heisman consideration, emphasizing his journey as an underdog. He credited his dedication and perseverance in a sport that has often overlooked his talent and accomplishments.

In light of the Sun Devils’ achievements this season, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark reiterated the strength of the conference, arguing that the performance of the Big 12 deserves more recognition compared to Group of 5 conferences.

Dillingham concluded with an optimistic outlook for the future of the Arizona State football program, declaring that the Sun Devils can realize their potential and shake off the notion that they’ve been a dormant powerhouse.

This victory not only boosts Arizona State’s postseason aspirations but also showcases the remarkable turnaround of a program that has managed to defy expectations so early in its Big 12 tenure. With such determination and talent, the Sun Devils may continue to rise in the world of college football.
