The Fiji Police Force Touch Rugby team gathered for a church service today in Raiwaqa, setting the stage for their upcoming participation in the Sukuna Bowl. The event was made more inspirational with the attendance of the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team, motivating the police players as they prepare for this celebrated annual competition.
For the third consecutive year, touch rugby is a key feature of the Sukuna Bowl festivities. The police team will compete in four categories: men’s open, women’s open, mixed open, and masters. Currently, the Police Force holds the titles in both the women’s and mixed divisions, while the Army leads the men’s category.
Assistant head coach Paul Darroch emphasized the drive within the men’s squad, especially after last year’s heartbreaking defeat in the final moments of the match. “They don’t want a repeat of what happened last year. They’ve returned firing with determination, and when the dust settles on the Nasova grounds tomorrow, expect the police team to be throwing their blue colors up in the sky,” he remarked.
The Sukuna Bowl events kick off tomorrow, featuring boxing and cricket, with the touch rugby matches to follow on Tuesday at the Nasova Grounds in Suva. This year’s festivities are expected to be a thrilling experience for both competitors and supporters alike.
Additionally, the Fiji Police Force rugby team is preparing to defend their title in the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl, which is scheduled for November 9. Assistant Commissioner of Police and Rugby President Mesake Waqa expressed the team’s commitment, not only to retain their title but also to honor their legacy during a significant year, marking the 150th Anniversary of the Fiji Police Force.
The competitive environment surrounding these events emphasizes athletic excellence while also promoting community spirit and unity among the different forces. This year’s Sukuna Bowl is not merely a contest; it represents the celebration of dedication and tradition that forms the backbone of Fiji’s sporting culture.
