Suffolk County has released the latest COVID-19 data as of August 12, 2024. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that hospital admission rates and the percentage of COVID-19 related deaths are now the key metrics for surveillance.
As of August 12, 2024, the daily hospitalization summary for Suffolk County shows that 94 individuals are currently hospitalized, with 62% of them admitted due to COVID-19 or related complications. There have been 29 new admissions since the last report, and 31 patients have been discharged. Currently, 8 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). It is important to note that hospitals will no longer provide data to the New York State Department of Health on weekends or holidays.
In terms of fatalities, the county has reported a total of 5,323 deaths since March 2020, marking an increase of 1 since the previous report. The annual death tolls are as follows: 2,311 in 2020, 1,507 in 2021, 1,015 in 2022, 318 in 2023, and 177 so far in 2024.
On August 10, 2024, the COVID-19 case tracker reported 131 new cases, which corresponds to 8.6 cases per 100,000 residents, and a 7-day average of 13.8 cases per 100,000, based on both PCR and antigen tests. It is worth noting that since September 1, 2023, all positive test results, including first infections and reinfections, have been aggregated on this page.
Vaccination efforts continue, with the department offering COVID-19 vaccines to uninsured and underinsured individuals through New York State’s Vaccines for Children and Vaccines for Adults programs.
