For 35 years, my husband and I have been dedicated ticket holders of the University of Utah football team, witnessing the tenures of three influential coaches: Ron McBride, Urban Meyer, and Kyle Whittingham. Although each coach had a unique approach to the game, they all significantly contributed to the enduring success of Utah’s football program. Their departures, often accompanied by a mix of celebration and controversy, seem to be a staple in the world of sports, highlighting the complexities surrounding coaching transitions.
As steadfast members of a passionate fan base, we have experienced the highs and lows that come with supporting our team. From tailgating in challenging weather to enduring those dreaded late game start times, our dedication remains unwavering. We sit alongside our fellow “Ute families,” sharing moments as our children grow and forge their own connections to this beloved program. True to our colors, we engage in friendly banter with rival supporters, especially during the intense “Holy War” against BYU. As the Beach Boys famously sang, we have remained true to our school.
Rumors of Coach Whittingham’s retirement had circulated for some time, and it was anticipated that 2025 might mark the end of his tenure. However, the announcement of his abrupt departure caught us off guard, particularly given the deep ties he established with the fans over the past two decades. While opportunities can arise unexpectedly, the swiftness of his exit felt jarring, leaving little room for closure.
Closure, in this context, is about communicating and actively marking the end of a significant chapter. Although Kyle announced his new opportunity at Michigan, the lack of a formal farewell felt uncharacteristic for someone we believed to possess integrity. It was disappointing that he would leave without coaching his final game at the Las Vegas Bowl, which could have served as a fitting conclusion to his storied career at Utah.
While we acknowledge that the Ute football program will surely adapt and thrive under new leadership, Coach Whittingham’s hasty departure without a proper farewell might linger in the hearts of many fans. His legacy is undoubtedly significant, but the unfinished business of his exit might leave an indelible impression on those of us who loyally supported him and the team throughout the years.
